Today's big story - My boss asked if anybody, specifically an engineer with client liason and HVAC skills, would be interested in an assignment to the UK for 6 months - starting early Feb.

It's in Sandwich, Kent and they provide a house and probably a daily living away from home allowance. To do it the way I'd like to may cost me money, but would be cheaper than a European trip for a family of 5.

I've spoken to J, the kids and the kids dad. Everyone seems to think it would work for them, so I've said I'm interested.

I'm imagining that I would go and suss everything, then J would come (having done whatever needs doing house-wise) and then a few weeks later the kids would arrive and start school locally. About 3-4 months later, the kids would go back to their dad and then we would return at the end of the project.

Things to organise/ sort out (IF I get it)

What to do with the house
What to do with the dog (put her down?)
Where are schools, can the kids get student visas?
What is J going to do all day?
Can we afford to do without a J wage?

I might investigate the visa thing before bed.

You can put her into a boarding place, but they are fairly expensive for a large dog. Cottage kennels & cattery in Yan Yean rd, Plenty is where my cats went on holidays while we were in Melb, and it is $13 per day for cats ($13 per cat that is), so a lot more for dogs. It is like a flash resort for kitties though.

Otherwise, you can get a housesitter who will also look after the dog. But this means that you don't get any/as much rent.

er...umm... be nice to the dog....

that is very exciting! Although you would all be sorely missed :(

But then you would all come home again :)

So that would be okay!

That sounds FANTASTIC! (well all except the bit about Binka)

I might just have to come visit you if you go.

When would it be?

$13 per day
That's where I get stuck - I'm not sure she's worth that much money to me.

She's old, she's arthritic, she's a bit incontinent, her poo is large and frequent and she's too big to be easily looked after by someone not used to dogs.

In making decisions and arrangements within a week - putting her down is where I get to.

OI hang on

could the rest of us come to some sort of dog-feeding arrangement roster? It'll mean there'll be people coming and going from your house, which would be good too.

If L is agreeable, we could stay over occasionally as well, so she wouldn't get too lonely.
