I found the circles of concern very helpful too. For me it's a quick check for whether I'm worrying, or ruminating. I've also used Douglas Adams' SEP theory. And the idea of a Guilt God from his Dirk Gently books.
Bad associations are funny things. I had to get rid of the mattress my father died upon, because I could still smell the sick-room smell on it five years later. When in fact it had been fumigated twice, and several trustworthy & keen noses had pronounced it odourless. In the end I decided that a psychologically induced bad smell is just as bad as a physical one & cut my losses.
