what a great line - "The time it takes to make a baby can be the time it takes to make a cup of tea"

And now I can have the whinge I've been trying to have all day.

Last night/early this morning I heard an alarm. It sounded and then it stopped and I thought I could go to sleep again. Then it started again and kept on, starting and stopping.

At first I was only half awake and I dreamt that I had gotten up to find out what is was. As I got to the door I saw lots of people walking away from the noise, and then one person ran, screaming "someone call the police!" In a surge of adreniline, I picked up the phone and then woke up - still in bed, but with my heart pounding.

Then I had to get up and so, at 4am, I called the local police station, read out the number plate of the offending car and asked them to call the owner. I was glad I had the phone outside, because when the noise stopped the police officer was all set to declare my problem solved, but then it started again and she was more helpful.

Of course that the phone call didn't get instant results and I had to listen to the radio to drown out the starting and stopping alarm. It stopped at about 5.30am.

It was very pleasing to see the owner getting her car jump started as I walked to work, and I told her I was very glad when the noise had stopped. I don't think she got my point.

What I should have told her was that if she wasn't close enough to hear her car alarm, she shouldn't turn it on. Please pass this on to all of your friends.

Btw, this happened before, about 6 years ago and was much more stressful, as MTB couldn't just whinge and get on with going to sleep, he had to dramatise and keep me awake too. I think we also got vengeful and wrote nasty notes to the owner and tried to get the council to give them a parking fine. So I guess it was better this time.

PS Tonight I was a domestic hero and made T a dress she is willing to wear at my sister's wedding. It took me 2.5 hours.

Many years ago, in the Smith St part of my life, there was a nightclub nearby, with some fairly regular clientele. One of whom had an alarm that I swear went off like clockwork at the same time every Friday night. And he always parked outside my window. I think it went off at about 1:30AM. I still wonder what would have happened if I had taken to his car with a sledgehammer.

So did the police actually stop the alarm/find the owner? what did they do?

Oh, and there were a group of guys who left the club every Friday night, loitered on the corner and made the same jokes every week about stealing the "no standing" sign outside my bedroom window. Gahhhhhhhh.

I don't know what the police did - I was semi asleep, but it did stop at 5.30 accompanied by a dog barking and a car door closing. I think it was the owner.

I also hate the car alarms that sound when they turn on or off. Sleeping adjacent the street as I do, owners come back at 12 ish (just as I've dropped of to sleep) and unlock their cars with a "wooooorup". Interestingly I haven't heard that for a long time. Maybe somebody caught up with how antisocial it is.
