Got to think about the meaning of life this morning, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] splodgenoodles. It's stuff I've thought about before and it's probably a big reason I had children as soon as I could.

I remember as a teenager thinking about why people are here, and what drives us to keep going and I decided that procreation is what it is all about.

Since then I've refined it: I think we're all here to support the continuation of the whole human race, not just our own, easily identified, relatives.

I think of myself as a part of a spider web of support for society. What I do isn't the most important of things, but nobody has individual responsibility for anything, so it's ok.

It works like this;

  • The people who seem to leaving an enormous legacy can only do it because their mother made sure they learnt to blow their nose when they were two, or sang them to sleep every night.

  • If she learnt the song she sang them from a sick uncle (who never had kids, and couldn't do art or any of the things we traditionally think of as "making a contribution")

  • Then that sick uncle was one of the people who was responsible for the enormous legacy we tend to attribute to an individual.

I guess what I'm saying is; "It takes a village to raise a child"

Each of us, every day, is making a difference to the future of the human race. Without one person, it will continue, but it will be different.
