My step brother's getting married in Newcastle, so the family is migrating there for the weekend.

My dad organised apartments for us all to stay in (one each) about a ten minute drive from Newcastle central (and the wedding ceremony and reception) opposite a shopping centre.

I accepted his help and then did some searching of my own. I found a double room, about a block from the wedding and reception venues, for $15 cheaper (a room instead of an apartment). It's also about a block from the surf beach.

I booked the room and cancelled the apartment.

Why?

  • I hate being dependant on someone elses car to get me places

  • I like to be able to walk to interesting stuff

  • In my travels last year the year before last, I learnt that I like to be at the centre of the local action

  • We are spending the day in Newcastle on our own, while everyone else does wedding panic and we'll be able to get places easily on PT (if we want to)

Now I feel bad that I've struck out on my own and I'm worried that I'll miss out on important family bonding, or something. Or else that I've made stuff inconvenient for other people, or me.

I'm also a bit intrigued by my response to the situation - assert independence and then worry that I've done the wrong thing and I'm just making my life unnecessarily difficult.

Oh well, done now
