Truck hire/lazyweb

The 3 tonne truck we need for Festival will cost about $1200 to hire for the 12 days we need it. Fuel will be another $600-$900, depending on the cost of diesel.

If anyone here knows a cheaper way to do it can they please speak up?

I might investigate travel insurance too. Last time I looked it was the cheapest way to insure for the hire car insurance excess. ie about $20 for the 12 days vs $20/day from the hire company.

I expect you've considered this before, but how about going with the "backpackers car" model, ie: people who would be divvying up the truck hire could insteadbuy something like this (well, okay, smaller and cheaper?) then sell it again after you've used it.

Or there's the option of keeping it, with the advantage of having it whenever you want, being able to store things in it for as long as you like, and doing as you please with it. But then there is the risk of mechanical failure (also a problem with a hire vehicle, though), expensive mechanical maintenance, the question of storing the truck in between uses and so forth.
