We regularly do these calculations. It is far cheaper for us to have one car and for me to get buses (cheap) and taxis (not cheap here) when necessary. While I do feel stupid for not driving, the facts are that given we both work similar hours on the same side of the city, it would be criminally stupid for us both to drive to and from work in separate cars. And it is still far cheaper for me to get taxis than to buy and run a second car.
If we ever ended up with the nieces, we'd rethink the second car, but at the moment one car works for us. We couldn't do no car easily, because Canberra isn't always an easy city for public transport.
