No Car - the first test

This week we relied on friends to transport us to the regular Monday thing.
Then we managed to get it together to join the car share company and I booked a 6 hour stint to visit my sister on Sunday and the 4.5 hours we'll need for our monday night thing. total cost - $130. It's $75 per day to have the car fo 24 hours, and $72 to have it for 6 hours. So I looked at the cost to have a car for two whole days and compared it to hiring. Now I've hired a car for two days, total cost $80 plus petrol.
And tonight I checked my car ownership figures again. If we hire a car for two days every week, and use flexicar for miscellaneous trips less than 4 hours, we'll still come out ahead of owning a car. The downside is that the car hire place is a bike ride instead of a walk away, and there will be some time taken to do the paperwork, but I think my time is worth the $30 difference. A hire car will also give us the freedom to take as long as we like for both the visit to my sister and Monday night, and it means that mr-bassman can do some car based stuff during the day on Monday and Tuesday as well.
and I don't think we'll need to hire a car every weekend.
