tents

Starting to think seriously about tents - making, designing without waiting until two weeks before festival.

I'm searching for soldiers tents - so the kids don't have to share with us.

Here are some things I found.

http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~nh0g/tent.html

http://www.past-tents.demon.co.uk/frame.htm

I also did a CAD drawing of our bed, put the tent centre pole about 50cm away from the bed and drew a circle to include the bed, with a bit of leeway either side. It would be 5m in diameter. When the pole is about 10cm from the edge of the bed, the tent is 4m diameter. For tents 3.3m, 3.6m and 3.9m, the resultant rope diameter is 8.8m, 8m and 7.4m. That's based on a tent with a shoulder height of 1.8m => is that too high?

1.8 means you don't duck going through the door. I would look at how much the rope footprint shrinks with a smaller wall hight. If the change is minimal go for tall. Why duck if you don't have to? The differance in fabric should be small. I think the original plan was to make my walls 1.8 as that was the fabric width. Hem and seam allowance took some of that to give the 1.6 or so it is now. I suppose it depends on how you are gong to cut out too.

Also, I think that you & MrB should do a class on rope beds at Festival next year, 'cause I'd like to hear about your research & stuff. Of course, you could just tell me about it, but if I'd like to know then probably other people would too.

If you're using the same side-poleless design I did, add more space around the bed. The walls do bag in more than I allowed for, even when taughtly pegged down.

I was thinking Rowayn prep thoughts yesterday too. I was thinking we needed to get into making tallow and beeswax candles, because my hayfever has been quite good lately and I can actually smell the petrochemical smell of the paraffin ones. Wanna make some next weekend or the weekend after?

Yep!
