spent some time going through my favourite shopping list of medieval tent designs tonight.
erudito these are the closest to what you were describing last night:

From my records, Rowan's tent is 2,8m x 5m. Note the horse, so I'd say it's about 4.5m. But ignore that, Rowan's tent is about 3m tall.
For a reminder:

So It would look like this: (I have autocadded it but I can't be bothered sorting out the whole conversion, posting and linking process.) Basically, like
tenbears tent it is based on the standard width of canvas, ie the walls and roof pieces are about 1.9m wide.
You will need 16m of the wall canvas and a bit less than 16m of roof canvas. You will also need 16m of valance, but that'll only be 500mm wide at most so 4m would be enough.
If you want to work out a budget - the canvas is about $15/m and you will need a lot of broomstick handles and someone who knows the right end of a welder.

Date: 2006-02-07 02:06 am (UTC)I contemplated it last night and gave up due to laziness.

Date: 2006-02-07 02:04 am (UTC)No, sorry. I mostly had a play with sizes and possible angles on a simplified drawing. For instance, by slightly changing the sizes of the sides and roof of the tent, you can get easier angles to measure and build ie 100degree angle, instead of 99degree angles.
OTOH at the construction tolerances inherent in tent making and welding of angles, if the tent you design came out at an angle of 99 degrees, you could probably use 100 degrees with impunity.
I expect that by drawing the tent in elevation and side view (what I did last night) and marking the major angles, you could show them to a competent welder and get what you want. Depends on the no of broom sticks you're using too, I guess.
btw. Rowan has already done a design for this tent- I'm sure

Date: 2006-02-07 01:55 am (UTC)It's one of the two pictures I managed to find showing soldiers tents within period. There are HEAPS a bit later. Although I've alsways meant to look harder at german landsknecht pictures.
btw the other picture with a-frame tents is here; http://www.currentmiddleages.org/tents/wagon.htm You have to look carefully, there are two.
