I think, when used in the sense of 'my arthritis is giving me Gyp (or the Gyp) today' , for example, its a dialect corruption of Gryppe or Gripe, when used of painful ilnesses, particularly abdominal, giving stabbing or cramping pains. Don't quote me on that, though.
