I read this article in The Age today and I'm interested in the assumption that all 16 year olds are suffering the stress of studying for the VCE. MsNotaGoth has finally made a decision about her future (for now) and decided to stop going to school, so she's not one of them.

I think I'm going to enjoy the chirpier, more positive and self disciplined person she seems to be at the moment. This evening she washed the dishes without prompting, and has just taken herself off to bed so she can get up at a reasonable time in the morning and start work on removing the paint from my weatherboards. A job I offered to MrPeacock a few months ago and he hasn't gotten around to.

The current plan seems to be to work for me until she goes overseas, and also spend the time looking into tafe courses and maybe apprenticeships, with a view to doing one of them or getting a job when she gets back.

We'll see.

I was forced to watch Robin Hood this evening. Something I'd crossed off my list of things to do when [livejournal.com profile] basal_surge wrote his review of the first episode. The piece of dialogue that sticks in my mind:

Beloved Retainer turned bad: "I shot the sheriff!"
Sheriff as he steps into view: "No, you shot the deputy!"

The striped t-shirts and Robin's hoody were also amusing. And, what was Marion wearing?

Oh hey. I looked up meat courses at Wm Angliss. Looks like their Cert III is 2 years part time which is more than I want to sign up for. Nevertheless, could you please pass the following URL along to MsNot, along with my email address? http://www.angliss.vic.edu.au/courses/2006/06butchery/intro.htm

There was a feature in the Sunday Age (in the Life bit) yesterday talking about people who'd left school early and succeeded. It also had the statistics for school leavers from 1980 and last year, which I found quite interesting. The general point seemed to be that if you left school to go into something, such as an apprenticeship, then you generally did OK. If you left with no real skills and no real idea how to get any then you tend to end up on the pointy end of the jobs market (although currently that's a good place to be if you're willing to relocate to middle of nowhere, WA.) The main gist was certainly that school as it currently is isn't for everyone[1], and some people are better off leaving and following their options.

[1]to which I can only add - that Bloody Blackburn Report. Seriously "everyone wants an academic education" has screwed up so many people in the last 10 or so years. No, they freaking don't. And they pissfart around and make it harder for those of us who are actually interested in it too. And I'm partially blaming it for the current trades shortage (although, yeah, the 1990-4 recession and sudden jump in mechanisation of various trades probably helped there as well.) Meh.

I had Robin Hood on last night for the first time becasue my step dad was visiting... oh dear god, I never thought I was a garb snob until I saw that hideous print over dress somethingorother that Marian was wearing. My Dad's dead keen on it too and he texts to ask if I'm watching it... *sigh*

And yes, I caught the "I shot the sherrif", "No you shot the deputy" piece of dialogue, cringed and went back to battleing with my laptop. It scares me what passes as good programming.. mind you I do partially watch Big Brother
