I believe that they're talking about the hundreds of kg of corn neede to produce the ethanol required to fill the tank of a large 4WD. So that's more than a kilogram of corn per day which is probably enough to feed a person if you add some kind of protein source. Dunno about vitamin intake though. This is why I've been dubious about biofuels from the word go...we're already having to push our arable land medium hard to feed ourselves. Besides, the energy return from using corn as biofuel is crap and I believe it's not anything like the cleanest of biofuels. Plus, the energy density of ethanol is crap so you go through twice as much of the stuff.
I forget exactly where I read it, but the actual numbers I read were on the order of 240 kilograms of corn required to make 100 litres of ethanol; which is, as you say, roughly the size of the tank in a large 4WD. I'm unaware of any vehicles that run entirely on ethanol - the best I've heard of is 85% in Saab's BioPower engines.
I must admit that I initially liked the idea of biofuels, but having actually read up on the requirements and consequences, I'm no longer a fan of them.

Why couldn't he just have said "...as much grain as it takes to feed a person for a year"
The point
