INDIAN students will be taught not to speak loudly in their native tongue or display signs of wealth such as iPods when travelling on trains at night, as part of a strategy to crack down on violent robberies.

If you replace the word "indian" with "women" would the newspaper still publish this story?

Good point. I wonder if Vic Polic still produce those awful brochures on personal safety for women that were around a decade ago, that advised much the same and more.

Mind you, women are 'advised'. Indian students 'will be taught'. That's pretty bloody rude.

I wonder whether the person who said that realises how demeaning it sounds? If not: Bad cop! Off to sensitivity training with you!

These women Indian students always dress carry valuable items so provocatively. If they want to avoid being raped attacked and robbed, they should not go about unescorted speaking to their friends in their own language.

This is a coded message to the other ethnic group who are suspect no.1 in these attacks. That's why there's no specially-tagged racism alert on this one, because if you listen to some people apparently racism isn't so bad when other folks do it.

The grimly humorous bit is that the Other Ethnic Group are completely tone-deaf to all hints of this nature, apparently.

You mean like the way I was told I was not allowed to go anywhere on my own after dark, because young girls (any age under about 40) are too much of a temptation for men, and being on my own was an open invitation to them? I still get lectures along these lines from my father. I guess he ought to know how warped men can be...
