laundry update, with added domesticity
Oct. 4th, 2005 11:16 amIt's hit a snag. We want to paint the floor. The floor previously had vinyl tiles. They were held on with glue, which won't come off easily, but scuffs and powders(a bit) when you scrape at it with a chisel. (The chisel is
mr_bassman's, and he used it first). So the paint isn't going to stick very well.
We have used the following in trying to get the glue off the floor;
angle grinder
heat gun and chisel - you get gummy stuff, but you don't seem to get to bare concrete.
chemical paint stripper - see heat gun above
just chisel - the lighter bits come off convincingly, but the dark ones just stay there, maybe the light ones are where people have re-glued the tiles.
turps and a wire brush - some of the glue turns into grey powder, this might then wash off. I only tried this about 20min ago. The turps does seem to get the gummy result too.
Things still to be tried;
hydrochloric acid
xylene based commercial product (not keen with a baby in the house)
give up and paint over glue, wait until can't stand peeling paint any more, clean some up, paint again, repeat.
give up and put down vinyl sheet. We could install vinyl sheet to cover kitchen and bathroom floor too.
In other news;
The domesticity thing seems to be going well. The dishes are done, the benches are mostly clear, there is bread rising for after school bread roll snacks. Yesterday I went shopping in the morning, napped, made wentelteefjes (dutch style french toast with a lot of cinnamon and sugar) for after school snack and got T to do most of one of her homework tasks. The leggings I'm making are nearly a whole leg, despite having to pull out more than half, twice, due to misreading the pattern.
I have most of the things I've angsted about needing before the baby arrives. Everything else can be received as gifts or done without. For your information, the things I wouldn't mind having include the following;
a soft carry basket (these seem to be called "cocoons" and look like this
a "sleeping bag" but not that daggy/poncy baby looking.
Clothes for festival
"Fluffies" style pilchers You can get them at Kmart and Target for about $5, but they only ever seem to have one pair of 00's at a time! - I need about 3 more.
Cot sheets
The other things I still have to do in preparation are; pick up the bassinet from the person who's lending it to us, pick up the car seat thingy from the hire place, pack my bag for hospital, and wash the nappies and baby clothes. Oh, and sort out where to put it all!
I guess there's no way I'm going into labour this week.
