I'll get more explicit:

Can people tell me their experiences of the best way to travel to and around the US?  Taking into account the places I want to go?

I spent a lot of time onlne this morning and I know some of the places you can get to by plane, but is there a better way?

Here's what I posted about Going to America in July/august next year.

Based on what happens with flights, I'm starting to see the shape of this trip something like this:

Mel - San Francisco - spend a few days in SF
SF to New York/Boston/Montreal
Drive around, finish with a week at Pennsic
Fly home from Pittsburgh.

And here's the map with places I'm inclined to visit.   Realistically, I think the two in the middle will be abandoned, for a trip centred around San Francisco and New York State/Pennsylvania. (We'll just hide the PEI visit)

I should also investigate trains.

Advice solicited!

Also, It appears that one of my holiday actiivities is to lie in bed dreaming about other holidays.

Sneetch and mr-bassman seem to be developing a plan that sees them travelling to the US next July/August.  They plan to travel around busking, selling cds on street corners and getting whatever gigs they can.  They plan to end their trip at Pennsic.

Where do Rose and I fit with all this?  Do we stay at home or do we go too?  We can't follow Sneetch and mr-bassman around, this is supposed to be Sneetch's gap year and you're not supposed to have your mother along on such an adventure.

This is another manifestation of the curse of family, where one person going off on an adventure is affordable, but engenders resentment, or everyone goes and it costs a fortune.  Do you deny one person a fabulous adventure, just because you can't afford to send everyone?

I've been thinking that I could go for only 2-3 weeks, while the others plan on 5-6 weeks.  I like the idea of spending a week at Pennsic, and I'm not sure I'm interested in spending so much money to travel and then spend 2 weeks in one place.

Looking at the map, I see that perhaps I could do the SCA, LM Montgomery, Laura Ingalls Wilder tour.  Taking in museums in New York, LMM touristy stuff on Prince Edward Island and taking a look at Almanzo Wilder's old home in New York State.  With sundry cultural experiences like Walmart, New York taxi's and driving experienced along the way.

I wonder if Rose would enjoy this?  I suspect she won't be as keen on the museums, but she has enjoyed colonial history stuff and wandering around old houses when we've done it before.  Maybe I could leave Rose at home?  Maybe I could make friends with a local family and arrange to leave her with them for two weeks?  Either for money or obligation to return the favour.  Otherwise, maybe my mum would be up for it, or dad or both, a week each.

Hmmm, if I took Rose, I would probably go for three weeks, but if I left her at home probably only two.

Time to start saving, I guess.  It looks like flights for Rose and I will cost up to $5000, before we do anything else.
