Firstly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] astemudfoot!!!

Secondly, I've spent some time researching toilets and I'll try to put it behind a cut but I'm at work and don't have a client.

There is an exemption available if toilet is designed specifically for the premises. BUT it doesn't apply if the plans are a photocopy of standard plans.

Manufactured WCTs that have been accredited by NSW Health are the Rota Loo, Dowmus and Clivus Multrum. The Enviro Loo, a waterless dessicating toilet also has approval. Advisory notes and accreditation guidelines are available from NSW Health, Gladesville or from the world wide web at: (www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/ehb/general/wastewater.html). Owner-built WCTs such as the Minimus and Farallones Batch have been found to enjoy a high level of user satisfaction (Pollard et al., 1997). Plans and building instructions for these two designs can be obtained from R Flanagan, ph 02 66 886 307, email rayflanagan@hotmail.com.

Byron shire council advice on on-site waste water treatment

There is a standard for waterless toilets - AS/NZS 1546.2:2001. It's being revised and the draft is available for free. - http://www.saiglobal.com/shop/Script/Details.asp?DocN=MSWD06928ATCRD

It refers to the main standard for a description of how to handle the leachate. The standard costs $163.15, but I think [livejournal.com profile] sjkasabi has full access to the standards via the university. Otherwise, we can look at them in the library and photocopy the relevant bits. AS/NZS 1547:2000 : On-site domestic wastewater management

What to do with leachate?

- separate urine from solid waste I THINK THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO GO!
- evaporate leachate - http://www.rotaloo.com/evaporator.pdf

i have actully been reading a book that talks a bit a bout worm driven toilets where the worms actully eat the waste. it says that it only needs to be emptied every three years, depending on the voulme of worms.

I'm concentrating on batch composting systems but I know of the one you mean - http://www.wormfarm.com.au/

I'm a bit confused about emptying them every three years. The average septic tank only needs to be emptied every 5-7 years.

yes, I think I can get Australian Standards through the library - though I've just been failing to get to them via the website. I will try again tomorrow, need to go do work now GRRRR :( I will complain in person later.

This is cool, though, and while I'm here, R thought it would be fine for you to have a detailed but theoretical (so if we were interested in doing x, how would that fit with the regs?) technical conversation with Yass council. So go for it, eh?
