G has spent the day telling me about the clothes he has bought and the (large) list of clothes he still "needs".

Today he came home with a pair of boardshorts and decided that the legs needed to be sewn smaller so they fit his legs more closely. He nearly went away to the beach in January without bathers because he couldn't find a pair that "had the right cut"

He has spent the last two hours (!!!!) agonising, pinning and sewing his shorts. Then he had to re-sew them because narrowing the leg had created "the wrong look" at the crotch and they had a "pouch".

Now he's got a different pair of trousers on (tight purple with pinstripes) and he's making orgasmic noises as he admires himself and his new army boots in the full length mirror.

I never want to answer, "Does this look OK?" again.

Oh, and I'm a bad mother because I didn't notice that he had had 1cm cut off his hair and it "looks so much better now."

Addit: Now he wants to set up a video camera at eye height, so he can see what he looks like from behind. Please, make him stop!

Just because we happen to be in a two-century dull period for male clothing, (it's all Beau Brummel's fault) doesn't stop the fact that male peacockery is how it's supposed to be :)

Except the sixties, the seventies and the eighties had some fun stuff. But only if you were prepared to stand out.

It could be worse. He could be spending all his money on misogynistic american rap, blingbling pseudo-gold chains and cocaine. Or something.

Oh, and bad mother's might not notice the haircut, but good mothers don't agonise on LJ that they think their son's vanity might mean he's gay ;p

Also, I don't understand your gay comment. Gay and peacockery are two separate issues.

If he is gay I'd be pleased that I had a son who was well adjusted enough to understand his sexuality and that our communication was good enough for him to feel comfortable telling me.

Just that some up-tight people link the two. A real bad mother at this point would be questioning her son's sexuality because he likes to look good - you on the other hand, see the peacock-ery for what it is - just being a peacock.

Oh dear, I wasn't actually implying anything! Just a very badly executed joke about how you weren't a bad mother because good mothers don't do what you weren't doing and... oh look, my head cold and I are going back to bed now.

But then my brain was trying to sort the good mother is bad and bad mother is good dichotomy and I just thought I'd make my side as clear as possible.

Pardon, I don't think there is even a hint of a gay subtext in the original post ...

(Particularly as I am fairly convinced it is not other boys he wants to impress, except possibly in the one-upmanship sense.)
