I think I've worked out some of what gets me so worked up about the latest round of "I'm a good parent and I always watch my kids, but I really hate people who let their kids roam free"

It's this.

Sometimes, I'm a "bad" parent. In my younger days, it's entirely likely that people described me that way more often than sometimes.

I know that mostly I'm a "good" parent but children don't let you hold onto that appellation 24/7. They wander off even while you're watching them. They get tired and hungry. They have an excess of energy that needs to be used up. Sometimes, you haven't yet worked out that they're up to a new stage of development and the thing you've been doing with them doesn't work anymore. Or you haven't spoken to an adult in too long and you sacrifice your child's bad behaviour for a moments peace. Sometimes they're the sort of child who is going through a stage of hitting other children, or throwing temper tantrums. And this is just the "normal" kids and their parents.

Parenting is hard work and people make mistakes.

And witch-hunting people for those mistakes sucks.

Thanks to Sneetch, I feel a bit like crap.  The panadol will kick in anytime now and I'll feel up to doing stuff.

What stuff?

This stuff:

go buy the last of the fabric we need for the Midwinter banner project.
finish up the plaster prototypes for casting
Midwinter admin
piggy back on mr-bassman's forging plan and melt some pewter for a casting trial

I'll also have a nap, go to dinner with their imminances and be part of the actual construction of banners this evening.

In my copious spare time, I'll be a part of Rose's kindergarten visit, write the post about being the parent of a 21 year old I've been planning, get MsNotaGoth to go to school and recover from this nasty disease.
mrsbrown: (Default)
Tomorrow I will:

sleep in a bit
carve some plaster in preparation for carving soapstone for my pewter project (tonight I will make plaster cake for carving)
go shopping for a really speccy gold fabric and some suitable red for Midwinter banners
sort out the clothes that don't fit Rose
motivate [livejournal.com profile] mr_bassman into working on the tent
Take Rose to kinder
Do some work on the Midwinter menu and website

By the way, I have the strangest headache. It's like the muscles in my upper back just decided to cramp, giving me a sleepy headache.

Also, I managed to line up the ducks and today I rode my bike to work and home again.

When organising a Crown event, you should pretend that it starts 3 months earlier than it really does.

Especially when you're also the Feast Steward.
mrsbrown: (Default)
I'm not working on Tuesdays. I need to sort out tokens for Midwinter. I'm going to try my hand at pewter casting.

I'm inspired by these collections of pictures;
http://www.flickr.com/photos/litlnemo/300704664/
http://asstudents.unco.edu/faculty/tbredehoft/UNCclasses/ENG238/238bust.htm

I've had a read of these articles;

http://aelflaed.homemail.com.au/doco/pewter.html
http://aelflaed.homemail.com.au/doco/pewterhorse.html
http://guillaume.garrigues.net/Pewterersguild/Introduction_to_Basic_Pewter_Casting.pdf

http://pewterersguild.org/Main/HomePage, including http://guillaume.garrigues.net/Pewterersguild/Introduction_to_Basic_Pewter_Casting.pdf

And now I'm an expert.

Tomorrow, I'll run around like a mad arse flea buying stuff - molding plaster (for practising before I persuade Sneetch to give me back the soapstone I bought him at Festival), an asian grocery steel ladle and possibly some lino carving tools, if i can't find the ones I bought 20 years ago and have never used.

I'll use some of the pewter crap we have lying around the house. It might have lead in it, but it's only for tokens and I'll hold my breath as I pour it.

Tonight [livejournal.com profile] dellascala posted a picture of a woman wearing black tippets.

It looks to me like that picture has been redrawn for the engraving in the book, which means that the tippets are in danger of having been misinterpreted by the modern artist.

So I tried to find a copy of the original manuscript online. Turns out that lots of people wrote about Willehalm de Orange, including Wolfram von Eschenbach in 1270. I don't think it's the right manuscript, but there are some very nice pictures.

There's also this nice one from 1420

This one's a child in a plaid houppelande and here's that kid again and someone in a particoloured houppelande I'm up to page 142

I found the manuscript I should be looking for, it's described here but I haven't been able to find it using my favourite manuscript search site

Here's an original picture from the manuscript, and it shows tippets!

I've done the research, cut out the fabric and then stalled because I needed to look at the research again to convince myself that what I cut out will work the way I want to.

Here are the pictures I'm using;

So I'm using rectangles to make the body, with a bit of shaping for the sleeve cap. It looks like the skirt is fuller in the back than the front.

The red coat fastens at the top and the waist, the skirt looks fuller at the front The grey one looks like it fastens at the side and isn't as full. I need to make Rose a nice warm flat cap.

I think this is a warmer time of year and the full skirts are the under dresses. The brown tops might be jackets.

I'm a bit worried about the collar. These close ups suggest that the body continues into the collar, but I didn't include that when I cut it out. I still need to make Rose a nice warm flat cap.

I went shopping this morning and bought some really nice green wool and some other stuff I won't tell you about 'cos it will just make you jealous. I also bought some whitework machine embroidered linen which I think I'll use for Sneetch's shirts.

You might like to check out Brunswick Fabrics. They had the linen and the wool. The wool was $10.80/m and included the nice navy cashmere stuff I've used to make hoods of warmth. No black there sadly. Another shop had 2 different sorts of black wool for $18/m and yet another had a beautiful black cashmere for $28/m.

btw. For Midwinter we should produce a google map of fabric shops with hours of opening and things to look for. Southron Gaard have this - http://sg.sca.org.nz/docs/FabricShopping.doc and it was very useful!!

Tonight I sewed the butonholes on MrPeacock's new fencing jacket.

And then the machine stopped making nice buttonholes, it just went forwards and backwards with a skinny zig-zag stitch.

Luckily I had done all the main jacket ones.

I had a nice time using one of the wood chisels to cut the buttonholes. Why didn't someone tell me that it's so easy?

I'm just waiting on MrPeacock so I can work out where the buttons go and the thing wil be finished.

This weekend is a sewnig weekend. I'm going to:

cut out a new dress for me and sew it together enough that it can have a final fitting on Tuesday night
make venetians for Sneetch
make sleeves for Rose
make a Bruegal coat for Rose
make shirts to go with Sneetch's venetians (I'll use my new copy of POF4 for that!!), but without embroidery.

I'm also heading to the werribee zoo on Sunday to bond with my sister, allow Rose to play with her cousin, check out the animal exhibits, eat African food and enjoy [livejournal.com profile] mr_bassman's gig at 5.30pm

It's a good thing [livejournal.com profile] mr_bassman just pulled apart the sewing machine and "lubricated the shaft" and also that MsNotaGoth will be looking after Rose all day Saturday and Monday.

I know I have a list of other stuff I need to make, but, thanks to a post on the lochac list, I found out about women's caps including an extant one from a swedish saint.

Take a look here - http://m-silkwork.blogspot.com/2008/11/womens-caps.html

I'm amused that there are descriptions of people wearing these caps under another veil - that's similar to what I've ben doing lately.

I think it might be good if there were an LJ feed of this blogger, can someone with an account set one up?

ETA: thanks to [livejournal.com profile] doushkasmum it's here - http://syndicated.livejournal.com/medievsilkwork/

or else other people have a different definition of reasonable?

First incident:

At Aldi this morning I was the second person in the queue at the check out. My trolley wasn't amazing full (but it cost me an awful lot more money than it should have, impulse buys!). I was approached by a slightly older woman with a bag of stuff and a couple of other items, there might have been less than 12 items, but maybe not. She asked if she could go ahead of me in the line. I said no and she went away to the other line. To try someone else I suppose.

Second incident:

I was driving my Flexicar back to its carparking spot. As I drove into the street there was some one doing a U-turn and I followed him to go and park in the correct place. Then he parked in my Flexicar spot. I tooted and indicated that he should move. I tooted again. Then I put the car into neutral and got out to explain that the car I was driving had to be parked in the spot he had put his car. The spot clearly marked, "No Standing - Flexicar only". He pleaded with me and told me that he would be "only a minute, he just had to pick something up". I repeated my story and told him I expected him to move. He then locked his car and started walking away!!

That's when I enabled booming embarassing voice, "I THINK YOU ARE BEING VERY RUDE, YOU SHOULD COME BACK HERE AND MOVE YOUR CAR". All the people in nearby Victoria St stopped to look and he scurried back to his car and moved it. I was only just leaving the car when he came back, so he was right, he was going to be only a minute, OTOH, how annoyed would I have been if he hadn't returned?

BTW, come and buy a fighter at Arrowsreach Tournament tomorrow and raise money for the Bushfires, as well a possibly winning a groovy medieval thing.
mrsbrown: (sca baby)

mrsbrown: (sca baby)
I have so many things I need to do today! I need to leave here in about 2.5 hours, with presents for my friends and all my family gifts sorted. I also need to make sure we have the food we need tomorrow. But I'm going to write this instead.

For Midwinter I intend to prepare a waste management plan. I would like to aim for zero waste to landfill. I might not get there, but I'll put in place processes to maximise the chances of it happening. I also want to write the plan in a way that means that other SCA events can put similar plans in place for their events. My focus is on kitchen waste, but if I see other stuff and it's reasonably simple to implement, I'll include it.

I'm all inspired because today I finally found these two organisations: http://www.fareshare.org.au/index.php and http://www.secondbite.org/

Outline:
Sources of Waste
How to reduce waste
How to reuse waste
How to recycle waste
What we need workers to do
What we need participants to do
Other stuff

Also, I really like this article, which has nothing to do with waste management, but has a lot to do with why I like Christmas.
mrsbrown: (sca baby)
yep it's a list of stuff my brain is boiling over with.

I need to finish the shoes I'm making for rose
I should finish that unfinished project I pull out every year before William Marshall
As you know I want some Roman garb
I want to make Rose some linen flemish with partlet and aprons
It turns out Rose has only 2 aprons, I think she needs more
I need to send the event form for Midwinter to Pegasus
but before I do that I have to find time at work to finalise the tourney location and thus the event costings
I need to find someone to sort out event tokens (this is a little early, but I'll keep stressing myself out to remember, so I'm writing it down so I can happily forget)
I should clean up the Family room
and put away my SCA clothes from last weekend
...
I could make some shoes for me!
and start putting together a menu for Midwinter, so we can plan times to make stuff
find the time to be a good Baroness, which I feel is lacking right now

And when I've finished all that I'll have time to angst about work
mrsbrown: (sca baby)
I'm off to Rowany Yule.

It must be time to try out this Roman thing, so I'm collecting links.

I'm not sure I have to go much further than this pdf. It's comprehensive, and it's got lots of period sources. I like it.
It's also got a picture of the leather bikini discussed at a certain Festival.

this site, on the other hand, has better tired person pictures

How to do underwear, by the first person I referenced. Sounds like it's worth a try.

This page is wacky! The clothing part of a book from 1895 on roman antiquity

I've found some stuff on hair styles but, as usual, I think I'm going to need help with that hair decoration dark art.
mrsbrown: (sca baby)
I've been feeling a bit lost lately. I haven't really had any enthusiasm for making stuff.

And then I realised that I didn't really have a list of stuff to do - hence no enthusiasm.

I got better:

Ankle boots for Rose

Flemish dress and partlet for Rose, in a fabric she won't overheat in during summer.

New pouch for [livejournal.com profile] mr_bassman

MsNotaGoth, who is reading this over my shoulder, says I need to put ankle boots for her on the list. Maybe she could make her own and then make some for Rose.

New shoes for me.

A theme and then menu for Midwinter

Flyer for Midwinter

Persuade MrPeacock to organise a play for Midwinter
mrsbrown: (sca baby)
I spent about 2 hours tonight watching Google Sketchup howto videos and here's what I've got to show for it.

The kitchen is intended to be 2m deep and 2.5m wide. Making it too small to worry the planning authorities, but hopefully big enough to satisfy the CFA to let us have a fire in it during fire season, if not total fire ban days.

The white wall just in front of the raised hearth is the ingle nook. Hopefully the smoke goes behind that into the roof space and out of the hole at the top of the gable end.

A later design will find a clever way to put an oven on one side, with the opening in the kitchen, under the inglenook.

Don't look too hard at the pictures. The inglenook is currently held up by skyhooks.

The roof tiles are unlikely to look that pretty - they might look more like these

Edited to add some stuff this morning

I forgot to mention that we could increase the depth of the building to have room for a prep table in the front, out of the weather.

Also, the firewall should probably face Northwest, to shade the occupant from the summer sun, particularly in the afternoon.

And I left out the daylight windows either side of the firewall.

The list of materials I'm imagining would be useful includes:

-bricks for the hearth (and more for the oven)
-bricks or suitable stones (not concrete block) for the firewall at the back
-withies for the inside of the wattle and daub
-mud and straw, maybe charcoal, for the daub
-trees at least 150mm diameter and 2m tall, with forks in the right place, for the corner posts
-150mm branches that are straightish for the beams; 3 x 2.5ish metres and 3 x the ultimate depth of this shack.
-roof tiles
- more free weekends - Sunday 19th October anyone?
mrsbrown: (sca baby)
I have a nifty drawing, but first some links to get you in the mood.

A kitchen should have a hearth raised above floor level, like the one in this castle kitchen

Note also the "chimney". It's a section of wall with an opening for the fireplace. The smoke goes behind it.

There's a section showing how the smoke hood might work on this page, scroll down to the heading "Firehood"

I think the fire window is pretty good, I saw one at the 1820's farm I visited in Tasmania two years ago.

Where does the smoke go after it goes out of the smoke hood. what happens at roof level?

There are some great pictures of a tudor kitchen interior here

Here's the outside of the building at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum
http://www.wealddown.co.uk/images%20winkhurst%20move/winkhurst_1.jpg

Where's the chimney? I think the smoke comes out of the triangular dark patch at the top of the gable end wall.

I've been promising people copies of the patterns for stuff I have made Rose, and I hadn't done it because I wanted to write it a particular way.

I've done it!

Flights to Perth for Midwinter Coronation for [livejournal.com profile] mr_bassman, [livejournal.com profile] mrsbrown and Rose:

Virgin - $1680
Jetstar - $448 x 3 = $1344
Qantas - $471 x 3 = $1413
Qantas frequent flyer points - 108 000 (I don't have that many!)

yep, dreaming.
